LSU Vet Med Welcomes the Class of 2029
August 11, 2025

The LSU Vet Med DVM Class of 2029 in their first veterinary school lecture.
It is with great excitement that the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine welcomes the incoming Class of 2029. This year’s class was one of the most competitive application pools we have seen in recent years. With 2,776 applicants, 200 students were admitted into the Class of 2029.
The average GPA for admitted students for the Class of 2027 was 3.55. Of the 200 students admitted, 102 are Louisiana residents, 20 are from Arkansas, 21 are from Puerto Rico, and 57 are from other states or countries. We have two international students this year, a first for the DVM program. Besides Louisiana, Arkansas, and Puerto Rico, our next represented states are Texas (7), Florida (6), and South Carolina (4). Seventy-two (36 percent) identify as being from a rural hometown (population of less than 10,000).
The average age is 24 with a range of 20 to 48. Fifty-four (54) are first generation college students, and 62 (31 percent) are members of under-represented minorities. Forty (20 percent) are male, and 160 (80 percent) are female. The average incoming GPA is 3.56.
Seventy-two (72) students (36 percent) come from rural areas (those with a population of less than 10,000), and 77 (38.5 percent) have an interest in large animal medicine (caring for horses and/or farm animals).
LSU Vet Med accepted its first class of 36 students, all from Louisiana, in 1973. Thirty-five students graduated in 1977. Class size has increased over the years, and our total number of DVM graduates is 3.771. Our graduation rate is 95 percent. Not including LSU Vet Med faculty, 70 percent of veterinarians licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Louisiana are LSU Vet Med graduates.
